The ACT Association for the Teaching of English is a professional association promoting dialogue and the exchange of ideas on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment for secondary English teachers.
Our history
ACTATE was formed in 1974 and is affiliated with the national Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) and the International Federation for the Teaching of English (IFTE).
What does ACTATE do?
- ACTATE offers professional learning and advocacy for members on issues related to the teaching of English.
- We host a wide range of professional learning opportunities each term and an annual national conference hosted by a state/territory association.
- ACTATE acts as an important advocate and advisor; by keeping members informed of curriculum issues, current theory and ideas related to the teaching of English.
- We respond to local government consultations and proposals on issues of interest and concern to association members.
- We contribute to responses to the government and the media at the national level through AATE.
- Publish an annual journal, ACTivATE, featuring articles by ACT and interstate teachers and academics.
In all of its roles ACTATE cooperates as appropriate with other professional associations, in particular the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) and the Council of ACT Education Associations (COACTEA) and through it, with the Australian Joint Council of Professional Teaching Associations (AJCPTA). Through AATE, ACTATE is also represented at the National Education Forum. These relationships are important networks to lobby government and the community on issues relating to education and the teaching of English, and the professional status of teachers.
Membership
ACTATE is open to any person interested in the teaching of English, including professionals from government, Catholic and independent schools, and tertiary institutions.
